As deer hunters, we’ve always got one eye on the woods and one eye on the sky. Whether we’re
timing a planting or timing a hunt, those dark clouds are critical to our success. That’s why DeerCast Map offers you Doppler weather radar. In order to use this tool, please follow the directions below.
- Engage the weather radar by first heading over to your map. That’s the folded map icon towards
the bottom left of your navbar. - Radar is considered a layer in DeerCast, so tap the layer button. It’s the stacked squares inside the
hex button in the upper right of your map screen. - Once it’s selected, close out the layer menu and the radar will be up and running. A few things you’ll notice at this point:
- A time slider will appear at the bottom of the screen and progress as it animates through a few hours in the past, the present, and then a few hours into the future.
- Pause it anytime by tapping the pause button at the left of the slider. Tapping it again will
restart the playback. - On the left of the screen is a legend to help you interpret the color coding of the Doppler radar. In general, from top to bottom, the colors indicate increasing precipitation density. The top spectrum is for liquid rain. The next one down from that is freezing precipitation. The third one down is for a wintry mix, and the bottom one is for snow. Tapping anywhere on them brings up a modal explaining each.
- With your radar layer on, you can pan and zoom around the map, and even turn on other layers, like waypoints, which is helpful if you’re wanting to see if the rain’s gonna miss you on your evening sit.
Please note that if you’re using an offline map and disconnected from the Internet, the radar layer will not show, since it can’t access real-time weather data for you.
